Cha cha Chia!?!

Most of us know this familiar tune and instantly think about animal/head shaped pottery that grows “hair” but the word Chia in the health industry is a bit different.  Chia is a seed; it’s a desert plant that is part of the mint family.  The seeds are no bigger than a poppy seed and can be black, grey or white in color.  If you see yellow or brown spec among your Chia seeds this could be an immature chia seed (doesn’t have as many super powers) or grass or weed seeds (often has an unpleasant taste).  When wet these little seeds absorb water and expand in size, creating a gel around them.

This itty bitty seed is by far a superhero in comparison to other grains and seeds.  For a super food the first thing that should be celebrated about it, is it’s not GMO.  Woohoo!! There is no need for it to be GMO, you ask why? Because it doesn’t need to be altered in order for it to grow better, ship better and store better, it already does all that!
