Skin, soaking up the sun!

We apply so much to our skin without even thinking…from soap/body wash, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, toners, face cream, body cream, perfume/body spray, hair dye and we puncture the skin with ink…I’m sure we’re missing stuff here. Now that it is summer, we add a little more…sun screen… well we hope you do!! Can you see where we are going with this?  We apply so many chemicals to our skin and most the them without even thinking! Eek!  Not to be a downer. ;)

Our skin is our largest organ which I think most us forget, so we’re just giving you a little reminder why you should love your skin!  It protects the muscles, ligaments, bones and organs which are beneath it.  It also helps protect us from getting sick by protecting us against pathogens.  The skin synthesis vitamin D (the vitamin which makes us happy!), it helps regulate temperature and prevents excessive water loss.  Another wonderful thing skin does is, it provides us with the sense of sensation.
So with all the important things our skin does for us we have to remember to treat it well.  We’re talking the whole body just like how we always talk about whole foods.  Just like packaged foods you need to read labels and choose ones that are healthy and right for your body!  Sun screen is loaded with chemicals (just another thing our liver has to detox).  We use them with the sole thought that we are doing something good, when unfortunately it might not be the case.  According to the EWG “nearly one-third of this year’s crop of sunscreens contains vitamin A, an additive that can accelerate the growth of skin tumors and lesions.” Sunscreens also contain harmful skin-damaging by products and produce free radicals.  This is just a little snippet of harmful facts about sunscreen but sunscreen is often needed and there are some better options on the market.  Some great brands are Alba, Aubrey Organics, Aveeno baby natural protection mineral block face stick, Badger…to name a few.  These products might be a bit stickier or not as smooth per say but remember, often the product that are smoother use harmful ingredients to get that desired effect.

Now we hope you’re not sitting there all depressed!  Go out and enjoy this scorcher of a sun!  Just me mindful…10mins in the sun is plenty of time to get some oh so lovely vitamin D and as my sisters always reminds each other…hats!  Let’s face it ladies we don’t want wrinkles!!!  Also you will be able to skip paying for botox later on in life (so bad!)!!  Buy yourself a cute hat and a sexy cover up and enjoy this week’s upcoming heat wave without harming your skin…pool side if you can swing it :)
