Cutting edge technology, High performance, Maximum protection!! Sounds like an ad for a car but guess what? It’s describing our food! Genetically modified (GMO) food that is! CBC pointed out that “some estimates peg as many as 30,000 different products on grocery store shelves as “modified”.” So what really is a genetically modified food? It is when the DNA of seed is altered by breaking apart the DNA and adding a specific chain that is say for example, resistant to drought. What is so bad about that you say? We could help feed all the starving people in Africa! For starters, part of the problem is that the modification of the DNA is done by using radiation or chemicals. As if we aren’t bombarded enough by chemicals/radiation in our everyday life as it is!
Once the seed is chemically altered, the seed is planted. That planted seed cannot grow unless you spray a product that is designed specifacilly for it by the manufacture because it has been specifically developed that way. When the plant is growing it is sprayed with some more specially designed sprays that are known as herbicides and pesticides. Another unfortunate part to all of this is that these “bad boy” corporations now own most of the heritage seeds. They have developed a GMO suicide seed that only grows once and can never be germinated to grow again (bye bye perennials)… and these “bad boy” corporations that invented this stuff say it helps the environment and our plant!! How so Monsanto?
Getting back on topic this method from start to finish kills the integrity of our food. The nutrients that our food is supposed to give us are destroyed before the GMO seed is even planted and then what little is left of nutrients is then killed by the consistent spraying of harsh chemicals. Then “they” figure that if it doesn’t have enough nutrients they’ll just add synthetic nutrients in after…Sorry but it’s not the same thing! Also, the body doesn’t know what to do with all of this fake GMO junk! It’s all wonderful in theory but disappointing in reality.
Unfortunately our Canadian Government is on the fence about the dangers of genetically modified foods, even though 80% of Canadian’s want GMO’s labelled on products. The top 4 genetically modified foods to keep in mind when shopping and when reading labels are Corn (also known as corn syrup, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, crystalline fructose to name a few), Canola (Rapeseed), Soybeans, cottonseed oil. Think you don’t consume these products? Think again. They are in hundreds of thousands of products hiding as oils, fillers, binders, thickening agents, as well as an ingredient to add texture.
Let’s stick to food the way Mother Nature intended! She has been doing it this way longer than any of us humans!
